RECAP OF FALL SPORTS WEEK #5: AUGUST 31-SEPTEMBER 5, 2020
It was another successful week and weekend in Mustang Athletics. Many teams as well as athletes were very successful on and off the playing surfaces.
FOOTBALL
The Football team started it's season on a high note by defeating GCC Opponent Elyria by a score of 21-12. The Mustangs were led on offense by RB Jack Crotty, QB Maddux Beard and WR Nick Turner and Ethan Geiss. Defensively, the team was led by Sophomore Michael Novak who returned an INT for a TD. The Mustangs (1-0, 1-0 GCC) will host Medina (0-2, 0-2 GCC) on Friday at Pat Catan's Stadium.
The JV Football team defeated Elyria on Saturday by a score of 34-12 to move their record to (1-0, 1-0 GCC). The JV team will travel to Medina on Saturday for a 10:00 AM Kickoff.
The Freshman team opened their season on Thursday at Pat Catan's Stadium, with a loss to Elyria 6-0. The Pioneers scored a late TD to get the victory. The Freshman team (0-1, 0-1 GCC) will travel to Medina on Thursday this week for a 5 PM kickoff
BOYS SOCCER
Boys Varsity Soccer: 3-0-1 (Currently ranked #5 in the Greater Cleveland Coaches' Poll)
Boys JVA Soccer: 3-1-1
Boys JVB Soccer: 1-0-2
The past week, the Boys Varsity soccer team defeated a tough Mentor team (ranked 7th in the Greater Cleveland Coaches' Poll) by a final of 2-1. The Mustangs were able to capitalize with a minute to play in the game to secure the victory. Then on Saturday, the Mustangs continued their success with a 6-2 victory over Berea-Midpark. Janjetovic, DeLeon, Minnick, Avondet(2) and Kennedy all scored for the Mustangs in the game vs Berea-Midpark.
The JVA team defeated Mentor 5-2 on Tuesday and the team followed that up with a victory Saturday at Berea-Midpark.
The JVB team added a win against Mentor on Tuesday by a score of 3-2. Mustangs are back in action this week as they host Elyria on Tuesday night and then travel to Westlake on Saturday.
BOYS AND GIRLS CROSS-COUNTRY
The High School Boys Cross-Country team finished 9th at Saturday's Mentor Invitational held at Garfield Park. For the season, the team improved its scoring average by :44 seconds per runner. On Saturday, the team was led by Charlie Lin with a time of 17:22. Also contributing for the Mustangs was Junior John Yarwood with a time of 17:36, Sophomore Jordan Nutaitis (17:43), Junior Jacob Lloyd (17:49) and Freshman Anthony Spronz (18:04). 25 of the Mustang runners had their best season while 16 had their career bests. The Mustangs will be back in action on Saturday when they host a mini meet.
The Girl's Cross-Country team had the week off and will compete this upcoming Saturday.
BOYS GOLF
Varsity Golf: 1-1 in 9-Hole matches
JV Golf: 2-3 in 9-Hole matches
This past week, the Varsity team lost a close match to Medina 156-157. Senior Michael Lee made 5 birdies in 9 holes to shoot a 3-under 33. Contributing to the match for the Mustangs was Dean Upholzer (38), Daniel Lee (41) and Ian Ferguson (45).
The JV Boys team beat Elyria this week 201-232, but fell to Medina 174-209.
GIRLS GOLF
Varsity Girls Golf: 4-1 in 9-Hole matches (have played in 7 tournaments)
On September 1, the girls hosted Medina and Solon. The Lady Mustangs won this match against its conference rivals.

The Lady Mustangs were led by Natalie Kostalnick (43), Reagan Bass (43), Grace DuPerow (49) and Madison Gilbert (51)
On September 2, the Lady Mustangs continued their success as they hosted rival Brunswick. The Lady Mustangs were able to defeat Brunswick 191-215.
The Lady Mustangs were once again led by Freshman Natalie Kostalnick (38), Senior Reagan Bass (42), Junior Grace DuPerow (54) and Sophomore Taylor Bass (57).
JV Girls Golf: 6-1 in 9-Hole matches.
On September 2, the Lady Mustangs dropped their first 9-hole match of the season to Mentor by a final of 217-214. In the match vs Mentor, the Lady Mustangs were led by Kaitlyn Such (53), Kendall Grau (55), Mridulaa Badri (53), Mya Mikolak (56)
GIRLS TENNIS
Varsity Record: (8-3, 1-1 GCC)
JV Record: (5-3, 1-1 GCC)
Varsity: The girls varsity tennis team dropped two matches to start the week but rebounded with wins over Brunswick and Bay to finish the week with a 2-2 record and improve to 8-3 and 1-1 in the GCC. On Monday, the Mustangs dropped their GCC opener to Solon 5-0. At second doubles, Miranda Lee and Paige Gesler pushed the Comets in each set but lost by a score of 7-5, 6-4. On Tuesday, Strongsville faced Westlake in the second round of the OTCA tournament. The Mustangs scored points at second singles where Amelia Matousek won 7-6(7-1), 6-1 and at first singles - the team of Brooke Brengartner and Manaar Muhammad won in three sets after rebounding from a first set loss 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. Strongsville traveled to Brunswick on Wednesday and came away with a 4-1 GCC victory. Raina Sinha claimed the first point for Strongsville with a 6-2, 6-3 win at third singles and Brengartner/Muhammad added the next point with a 6-2, 6-3 win at first doubles. Lee/Gesler clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-4 victory and Matousek added a 7-5, 6-0 win at second singles. The Mustangs rounded out the week with a 3-2 win over Bay as Matousek (6-0, 6-2), Sinha (7-5, 6-4) and Brengartner/Muhammad (6-3, 6-3) all won matches. Strongsville will host Mentor in a GCC match Wednesday.
JV: The girls JV tennis team went 1-2 last week as they secured a 5-0 win over Brunswick at home on Wednesday. The Mustangs (5-3, 1-1 GCC) traveled to Solon on Monday where they dropped the GCC opener to the Comets. The team rebounded on Wednesday as they hosted Brunswick in GCC action and completed a sweep with a 5-0 victory. On Thursday, Strongsville faced Bay at Bradley Park, but fell short by a score of 4-1. Elizabeth Ong picked up the team point for the Mustangs at Bay in a three set match at second singles. The Mustangs return to GCC play this week when they travel to Garfield Park in Mentor to face the Cardinals.
GIRLS SOCCER
Varsity Record: (2-0, 1-0 GCC; Currently ranked #1 in Greater Cleveland Coaches' Poll)
JVA Record: 1-0-1, 1-0 GCC)
JVB Record: 1-1, 1-0 GCC)
Varsity-The team is off to a strong start recording shutouts in their first two matches. Opening on the road against perennial Ohio top 10 Massillon Jackson, the team earned a 5-0 victory. This is the largest winning margin in the 13 games played against the Polar Bear program. The Mustangs opened GCC play at home with a 2-0 victory against a much improved Mentor side. The team has been led thus far by senior All-American candidates Sarah Robertson (Miami of Ohio), Madi Snyder (Cleveland State), Shelby Sallee (Xavier), and Peyton Felton (Memphis U.) The coming week has the Mustangs with a road GCC match vs. Elyria and then a big home match with defending State Finalist WhiteHouse Anthony Wayne. The team is ranked #1 in the first Greater Cleveland poll and will likely be in the first top ten Ohio poll.
JVA-The team earned a hard fought 1-1 draw at Massillon Jackson with freshman Brynn Severence finding the late equalizer. Mid-week the girls recorded a dominant 7-0 victory vs. Mentor. Junior Marin Cobb had a hat trick. Sophomore Shaleigh Beckrest is off to a great start with two very solid matches.
JVB-The Mustangs had a win and a loss this week. Against Mentor they recorded and 4-1 win. The next day vs. a tough North Royalton team the girls lost 5-1 as the back to back games took their toll. Sophomore Maggie Mcgowan is off the a strong start with a goal in each game.
STRONGSVILLE HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC SCHEDULE WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 7-SEPTEMBER 12
FOOTBALL HOME GAME FRIDAY:
This Friday will be the first home game for the Mustangs as we host Medina. Just a reminder that every spectator that enters the stadium must have a MASK and wear the MASK for the duration of the game. All Spectators must remain seated throughout the game. When you arrive at the game, you will see the home and away grandstands have seats marked as to where to sit. Any seat or bleacher that has tape across it is a NO SEATING AREA. All areas are taped off in pods of 4 seats to accommodate all our spectators.

PRACTICES CLOSED TO ALL SPECTATORS
Just a reminder that all practices for all teams are closed to spectators. As we try to mitigate the spread of the COVID-19 virus, all practices will be closed to parents, friends and community members. When the time is appropriate to open facilities for spectators, we will communicate with all families. Thanks for your understanding

FRIDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL CONCESSIONS (UPDATE)
There will be NO CONCESSIONS held during Friday night football contests. We have managed to partner with various businesses in the area to provide funding back to the SIMB Boosters. When you visit a partner on Friday nights as well as Saturday mornings (during stated hours) the businesses will kick back a percentage of all sales to the SIMB Boosters. JERSEY MIKE'S ABOVE AND BEYOND PROGRAM
The Mustangs athletic department has partnered with Jersey Mike’s to recognize student athletes who go above and beyond in the classroom and on the athletic playing field. Coaches nominate athletes and then a committee comprised of administration and high school coaches determine who is selected each week. This week’s participants come from the Girl’s Tennis Program and the Boy’s Cross-country program
The Girl’s Above and Beyond recipient for the Week of August 31- September 5th is:
Amelia Matousek (Junior) Amelia completed the first three weeks of the 2020 season with a 6-0 dual match record at number two singles and a 1-0 record at one doubles with teammate Bhavya Anoop. At the Medina Doubles Tournament, Amelia teamed up with Bhavya to go 2-1 with three set victories in the first round and third place match to take third place in the first doubles bracket. Amelia has not dropped a set in dual matches this year. Off the court Amelia earned Academic All GCC for the 2019 season.
The Boy’s Above and Beyond recipient for the Week of August 31-September 5th is:
John Yarwood (Junior) John has an outstanding 4.3 GPA. His favorite subjects are Math and History. As a job, John likes to volunteer with Special Olympics. When John is not competing or training, he loves traveling and swimming. As a Freshman, John’s best 5K cross country time was 19:38. As a Sophomore last year, John improved by almost 2 and a half minutes. Now in the early season of his junior year, John has shown that he is on pace to improve once again. His coach Michael Knapik lauds him as a fine young man.
