RECAP OF FALL SPORTS WEEK #6: SEPTEMBER 7-SEPTEMBER 11, 2020
It was another successful week and weekend in Mustang Athletics. Many teams as well as athletes were very successful on and off the playing surfaces.
GIRLS SOCCER
Varsity Record: (4-0, 2-0 GCC; Currently ranked #1 in Greater Cleveland Coaches' Poll; #2 in the State Poll)
JVA Record: 1-1-2, 1-0 GCC)
JVB Record: 1-3, 1-0 GCC)
JVB- The JVB girls soccer team is playing great and working through some injuries that have left the team’s depth depleted. Sophomore Maggie Mcgowan and Sophomore Maddy Phan continue to have a positive impact on the team.
9/8 loss to Medina 0-3
9/12 loss to Anthony Wayne 0-3
JVA- The JVA team is showing continued signs of improvement from top to bottom. Sophomore Shaleigh Beckrest and Junior Marin Cobb have played extremely well in the early part of the season.
9/8 loss to Medina 0-4
9/12 draw with Anthony Wayne 2-2.
Varsity- The Varsity team capped a great week with a big win against Anthony Wayne in a match that will have implications in the Ohio and National polls. Strong defensive efforts from the whole team continue to be the theme in the early season. Seniors Sarah Robertson, Madi Snyder, Peyton Felton, and Shelby Sallee continue to water the bamboo for the Mustangs.

BOYS SOCCER
Boys Varsity Soccer: 4-1-1 (Currently ranked #5 in the Greater Cleveland Coaches' Poll)
Boys JVA Soccer: 5-1-1
Boys JVB Soccer: 3-0-2
This past week, the Boys Varsity soccer team defeated Elyria in GCC action by a final of 4-0. Kennedy, Janjetovic, Lucek and Hryszko all found the net for the Mustangs. On Saturday, the Mustangs suffered their first setback of the year, when they fell to the Westlake Demons by a final of 1-0. Although the Mustangs fell to Westlake, they still remain unbeaten in GCC play and will host Solon on Tuesday at Foltz.
The JVA team defeated Elyria on Tuesday and the team followed that up with a victory Saturday at Westlake 1-0 to improve to 5-1-1 on year.
The JVB team added two wins to its tally this past week when they defeated North Royalton on Wednesday by a score of 2-1. The Mustangs trailed 1-0 the majority of the game until they were able to come back and defeat the Bears. On Thursday, the team defeated Twinsburg, by a final of 6-0. Bridges, Ostryk, Mohammad, Heidenhoffer and Yanke all scored for the Mustangs.
BOYS AND GIRLS CROSS-COUNTRY
The Girls Cross Country team finished 3rd out of 8 teams at the Strongsville Mini-Meet held at Strongsville High School on Saturday 9/12. Finishing 3rd overall in the race was Senior, Marquis Globokar, with a time of 20:30. Finishing right behind in 4th place was Sophomore, Julia Isham, 20:32. Right around the corner in 6th place was Junior, Sydney Wingler in 20:59. Completing the Top 7 finishes for the girls were Amani Najjar, Jesse Castle, Sophia Kuhar, and Lizzie Misencik. The Girls look to continue their success next week as the Girls Varsity Team travels to Boardman for the Boardman Spartan Invitational while the Open Girls run at home against Medina Highland in a Dual Meet. The SHS Boys Cross-Country team competed in their own Mini Invitational this past weekend. The team placed 3rd out of 7 teams. The mustangs were led by senior Charlie Lin with a fine 7th place finish out of 150 runners. Following close behind were junior John Yarwood, senior David Wyler, sophomore Jordan Nutaitis, and junior Jacob Lloyd. Solid performances were also run by sophomore Matt Schwass and Freshman Anthony Spronz.
The team is gearing up for a dual with Highland this Saturday at the Mustangs’ home course.
BOYS GOLF
Varsity Golf: 1-1 in 9-Hole matches
JV Golf: 2-3 in 9-Hole matches
VARSITY: The varsity played Saturday in the Grove City Invite at Hickory Hills CC. The team shot 331 and finished 5th out of 17 teams. The team was led by freshman Dean Upholzer with a 77, Micheal Lee with a 78, Daniel Lee with an 86 and Connor Zitnar with a 90.
JV: The Boy’s JV Golf team played at Ashland this past week and shot 389 to finish 10th out of 16 teams. Jake Petkov led the team with an 88 while Matt Corpuz shot a 94.
GIRLS GOLF
Varsity Girls Golf: 5-1 in 9-Hole matches (have played in 8 tournaments)
On Tuesday September 8th vs North Royalton, the Lady Mustangs golf team defeated the Lady Bears by a score of 198-213. Leading the way for the Mustangs was Natalie Kostalnick who shot a team best 39. Reagan Bass, Grace DuPerow and Taylor Bass all shot a 53 to round out the scoring for the Mustangs.
On Thursday September 10th, at the Medina Invitational held at Medina Country Club, the Lady Mustangs finished 7th out of 16 teams with a team score of 358. Once again, Natalie Kostalnick led the team with an 81. Grace DuPerow added a 94 while Taylor Bass and Reagan Bass contributed with a 96 and 97 respectively.
To wrap at the week, the Lady Mustangs competed in the 3rd GCC tournament at Mallard Creek. The Lady Mustangs were able to finish 2nd out of 5 teams for the tournament. Kostalnick shot an 81 while DuPerow added a 96. The Bass sisters contributed with a 100 and 104 to round out the scoring for the Lady Mustangs.
JV Girls
The JV Girls Golf team traveled to Briarwood on Tuesday (9/8) to take on North Royalton. The JV Team defeated North Royalton as they were led by Sarah Zoul who shot a 51
On Wednesday, the JV team competed against Brecksville-Broadview Heights at home and was able to defeat the Bees 208-239. Sarah Zoul once again led the team with a 50
To wrap up the week, the JV Girls golf team traveled Saturday to Cossett Creek to compete in the Brunswick invitational. The team scored a 411 to place them in 3rd place. Leading the way for the team was Mridulaa Badri who shot a 94 and tied for the individual low. Kaitlyn Such (105), Kendall Grau (105) Sarah Fleming(107) rounded out the scores for the Lady Mustangs.
GIRLS TENNIS
Varsity Record: (8-4, 1-2 GCC)
JV Record: (5-4, 1-2 GCC)
Varsity: The Mustangs dropped their only match of the week Wednesday as they fell to GCC opponent Mentor 3-2. Amelia Matousek secured a point for Strongsville at second singles as she defeated her opponent 6-3, 6-2. The first doubles team of Brooke Brengartner and Manaar Muhammad also knocked off the Cardinals by a score of 6-1, 7-5. The team wraps up GCC play this week as they face Elyria Monday and Medina Wednesday. On Tuesday the Mustangs travel to Wadsworth to resume their match postponed by rain.
JV: The JV Mustang tennis team dropped a dual match at Mentor Wednesday and competed in the JV GCC Tournament Saturday. Against Mentor, Strongsville fell 4-1 led by Elizabeth Ong’s three set win at second singles. After winning the first set and dropping the second set, Ong pulled off the third set tiebreaker 10-8.
At the JV GCC tournament the Mustangs were led by Avery Gillahan’s second place finish at first singles. After defeating Elyria in the first round (6-4, 6-0) and Brunswick in the semi-finals (6-1, 7-5), Gillahan fell to Solon in the championship match (6-2, 6-2). At second singles, Brooke Rasanow took fourth place after dropping a tight match in the third place match 10-8 in the third set after coming back in the second set. Anya Krishnan and Anoop Kaur took third place after defeating Mentor in the third place match. This week the JV team hosts Elyria on Monday and travels to Medina Wednesday.
VOLLEYBALL
Volleyball begins their season on Monday when they host Laurel. JV begins at 5 while Varsity will play afterwards.
FOOTBALL
The Football team along with the Mustang cheerleaders celebrated senior night on Friday night at home against Medina. In all, the Mustangs recognized 38 seniors and their parents, thanking them for all their time and dedication that was put in over the last 4 years. Although the game did not produce the outcome that we wanted, it was still a unique and special night for the Mustangs. The Varsity team fell the Medina 34-7. The loss moves the Mustangs record to 1-1 overall and 1-1 in GCC play.
The JV Football team defeated Medina on Saturday by a score of 42-28 to move their record to (2-0, 2-0 GCC). The JV team will host Euclid on Saturday for a 10:00 AM Kickoff.
The Freshman team traveled to Medina on Thursday and even though they came up on the short-end of the scoreboard by a count of 38-28, the team fought back from an early 1st half deficit. The Freshman team (0-2, 0-2 GCC) will host Euclid on Thursday this week for a 5 PM kickoff.

SCS STAFF ATTENDING GAMES
Unfortunately, the Greater Cleveland Conference has implemented a policy that does NOT allow for staff members to attend Fall Sporting events free of charge. With the limited seating capacity in all venues, we have to strictly abide by the percentage of seats we have available. If you, as a staff member, have a child that participates in a fall sport and you want to attend, unfortunately, you will have to pay to enter per the GCC policy. If you have questions please reach out to the Athletic Office.
PRACTICES CLOSED TO ALL SPECTATORS
Just a reminder that all practices for all teams are closed to spectators. As we try to mitigate the spread of the COVID-19 virus, all practices will be closed to parents, friends and community members. When the time is appropriate to open facilities for spectators, we will communicate with all families. Thanks for your understanding

FRIDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL CONCESSIONS (UPDATE)
There will be NO CONCESSIONS held during Friday night football contests. We have managed to partner with various businesses in the area to provide funding back to the SIMB Boosters. When you visit a partner on Friday nights as well as Saturday mornings (during stated hours) the businesses will kick back a percentage of all sales to the SIMB Boosters. JERSEY MIKE'S ABOVE AND BEYOND PROGRAM
The Mustangs athletic department has partnered with Jersey Mike’s to recognize student athletes who go above and beyond in the classroom and on the athletic playing field. Coaches nominate athletes and then a committee comprised of administration and high school coaches determine who is selected each week. This week’s participants come from the Girl’s Tennis Program and the Boy’s Cross-country program
The Girl’s Above and Beyond recipient for the Week of September 7- September 11th is:
Natalie Kostalnick (Freshman) Natalie completed her first month of high school golf with a stroke average of 37.5 for 9-holes and 78 for 18-holes. Natalie shot a 1-over par 72 at the 2nd GCC tournament to win as an individual. Natalie then followed up that performance by shooting a 34 at Briarwood in a victory of North Royalton.
The Boy’s Above and Beyond recipient for the Week of September 7-September 11th is:
Petar Janjetovic (Sophomore) In the words of Head Boys Soccer Coach Kyle Veris, Petar is playing at an unbelievable elite level right now. Petar has scored 3 goals in the the last 3 games to lead the Mustangs to an early 4-1-1 overall record and 2-0 GCC record.
Congratulations to Natalie and Petar and Good Luck the rest of the season!
