ATHLETIC UPDATES- May 3, 2021
SPRING SPORTS WRAPPING UP
As we enter the month of May, that means the spring sports season is rapidly coming to a close. There are only a couple more weeks of the regular season before state tournaments begin for all sports. It's hard to believe how quickly the spring sports season has come and gone. Here is a recap of this past weeks contests.
BOYS LACROSSE
The Boys lacrosse team had a tough week as they played some fierce competition. The team took on Rocky River Tuesday night and the Mustangs feel to the Pirates by a score of 13-5. Then on Saturday, the team played its last regular season home game against Olmsted Falls. The Mustangs trailed at the half 5-3, but were never able to overcome the Bulldogs. Olmsted Falls went on to win the game 14-4.
The Varsity team now sits at 8-5 on the season and will travel to Brunswick (Monday), Avon Lake (Wednesday) and then close out the regular season at Berea-Midpark (Friday). Good Luck Mustangs.
GIRLS LACROSSE
The Girls lacrosse team had another successful week of action. On Tuesday, the team traveled to Rocky River. The Lady Mustangs gave up a late goal and fell to the Pirates 9-8. This is only the girls 3rd loss of the season.
The Lady Mustangs were able to regroup on Saturday when they traveled to Wadsworth for a non-conference contest. The Lady Mustangs prevailed 17-7 to improve to 10-3 on the season.
The team will host Brunswick on Tuesday, host Kenston on Thursday and then travel to Bay on Friday. This week will also mark the end of the regular season for the Lady Mustangs.
GIRLS TRACK
Congratulations to the Girls Track and Field team for their 4th place finish at the 64th Annual Berea Relays on Friday held at Brunswick High School. Earning 1st place medals were: Paige Fabrizi and Sophia Birch in the HIgh Jump. Paige jumped a new PR of 5′ 4″.
Earning 2nd place medals in the 4×1600 were Brynn Severance, Marquis Globokar, Tina Varis, and Julia Isham. Also, earning 2nd place medals were the 4×100 Relay team of Paige Fabrizi, Mackenzie Schulz, Deborah Wilson and Shelby Sallee; and the Sprint Medley Team of Paige Fabrizi, Mackenzie Schulz, Shelby Sallee, and Vanessa Fabrizi.
Taking home 3rd place medals were the Distance Medley Team of Brynn Severance, Bethany Perron, Amani Najjar and Julia Isham. Sophia Birch finished 3rd in the 100 Hurdles.
A 4th place ribbon went to the JV Sprint Medley of Ava Zellers, Ty’Niyah Holley, Na’ail Ali, and LeAnne Hawk. 4th Place was also awarded to the 4×800 Relay Team of Marquis Globokar, Jesse Castle, Tina Varis and Sydney Wingler.
5th place ribbons were earned by the JV Distance Medley of Rachel Clifford, Lizzie Misencik, Kara Mucurio and Maiti Walsh.
6th place ribbons were won by Paige Fabrizi, Vanessa Fabrizi, Kayla Astrab and Bethany Perron in the 4×400 as well as the Long Jump Relay of Sophia Birch and Kara Mucurio.
BOYS TRACK
The boys track and field team traveled to Euclid on Wednesday and then competed at the Berea-Midpark Titans Relays on Friday.
On Wednesday, the team defeated Euclid. On Friday, at the Titans Relays, the team took home a 4th place finish, only 2 points behind the 3rd place finishing team.
Highlighting the meet on Friday, were the sprint medley relay team of Jason Volan, Andrew Arslanian, Nick Turner and Matthew Cornelius who finished in 2nd place.
In the 4X200 meter relay, the team of Jared Lewis, Matt Cornelius, Andrew Arslanian and Nick Turner took home 1st place with a time 131.49.
John Yarwood took home a 5th place finish in the Boys 3200 meter run with a time of 10:11.
In the Boys 4X400 meter run, the team of Matt Cornelius, Alex Rupp, Andrew Arslanian and Jason Volan took home the first place finish for the Mustangs
In the High Jump, Andrew Beten took home the top honor for the Mustangs with a jump of 6'0"
In the Pole Vault, Jared Lewis took home a share of 1st place with a 13 foot 6 inch vault.
In the Shot Put, Anthony Lambert took 4th with a throw of 50-01"
The team will be competing at the Mentor JV relays on Monday before traveling to Brunswick on Wednesday for a key GCC dual and then the team completes the week at the Olmsted Falls Relays on Friday
SOFTBALL
This past week, the Lady Mustangs softball team went 2-3. On Monday, the team lost a close one to Medina 4-0. On Tuesday, the team was able to regroup and defeat Elyria 4-1. On Wednesday, the team picked up another home victory 13-0 over Euclid. On Saturday, the team participated in the St. Joe's Academy Battle of Lake Erie showcase. The team fell to Hudson in the opening game 8-0 and then fell to Perrysburg in their second game 13-2.
On Sunday, the Lady Mustangs also held their OHSAA District seed meeting. The Lady Mustangs (voted #21 in the 35 team district tournament) will travel to Lorain on Monday May 10 for their first sectional game. If the team wins that, they will travel to Brunswick on Wednesday May 12th for the sectional final.
The JV Lady Mustangs went 1-2 on the week with an 8-2 victory over Medina before falling to NDCL and Hoban in the St. Joe's Academy showcase.
BASEBALL
The Baseball team moved to 10-7 on the season and 5-4 in the GCC.
Earlier in the week, the Mustangs fell to Brunswick two times in last inning heroics. On Monday, the team led 9-6 before giving up 4 runs in the bottom of the 7th. Then on Tuesday, the tables were turned as Brunswick led 4-0 heading into the bottom of the 7th and that is when the Mustangs were able to rally for 4 runs and tie the game. In the 8th inning, some costly miscues allowed Brunswick to score 4 runs and the Mustangs fell 8-4.
On Saturday, the team competed against St. Ignatius. Due to the rain earlier in the week, the game was played at Baldwin-Wallace. Ignatius led 2-0 until the bottom of the 7th, when the Mustangs plated 2 runs to tie the game. The Mustangs had the winning run 90 feet away with only 1 out, but were unable to get the run across. In the top of the 8th, the Wildcats plated a runner and that was enough to defeat the Mustangs 3-2.
This week, the team travels plays 5 games in 6 days. They will host Medina on Monday, travel to Medina on Tuesday, host Elyria on Thursday, host Stow on Friday and then travel to North Royalton on Saturday.
The JV team picked up two wins this past week with a 6-4 victory and 11-7 victory over Brunswick. The team now sits with a 10-5 record.
BOYS TENNIS
The Strongsville Tennis Team beat Brunswick 4-1 this past Monday. Friday, the Mustangs wrapped up the Conference Schedule for the GCC finishing in 4th place. It is a very busy week ahead for the tennis team as they are away Tuesday at N.Olmsted. On Wednesday, the team will host Senior Day against Twinsburg and then on Thursday the team will host Beachwood all 4:30 starts. The OHSAA Sectional tournament begins on Tuesday 5/11 at 9AM

The awards presentation will mark the end of some fantastic high school careers for many athletes. More details will be coming out in the near future.

PRACTICES AND SCRIMMAGES CLOSED TO ALL SPECTATORS
Just a reminder that all practices and home scrimmages for all teams are closed to spectators. As we try to mitigate the spread of the COVID-19 virus, all practices will be closed to parents, friends and community members. When the time is appropriate to open facilities for spectators, we will communicate with all families. Thanks for your understanding
REMINDER ABOUT SPECTATOR POLICY
Just a reminder about the athletic spectator policy. Tickets to all HOME events must be purchased in advance and online through our online ticket partner, Ticket Spicket. Also, even though games are outside, MASKS MUST STILL BE WORN AT ALL TIMES
ONLY IMMEDIATE FAMILY MEMBERS (i.e. parents and siblings) are allowed at home games. If you are NOT using your tickets, please do not "give" your allocated amount to another family. No ticket codes should be given to students to attend the games. There will be some new procedures in place for all spectators and you maybe asked to show your ticket if we think you are not supposed to be at the game.

We want to make sure everyone understands the testing procedures of COVID-19. If you suspect you may have COVID or you go and receive a COVID test, YOU ARE NOT to attend any practices or games until those test results come back. If you have questions on this, please reach out to the Athletic Training staff.

It will turn on automatically when the scheduled time arrives. If you ever lose the link, you can CLICK HERE to view it again.
Mustangs live stream will be made available through BOXCAST on ROKU, Apple TV or Firestick. For sports such as Basketball and Wrestling, those will be live streamed on the SHS Athletics YouTube channel.
