On behalf of Athletic Director, Denny Ziegler, Athletic Secretary Paula Spokane and the all the coaches, we want to wish all families a very safe, healthy and happy 2021.
WINTER SPORTS UPDATES
Here is a recap of the many events that took place last week in Strongsville Athletics.
Hockey
The hockey team had 2 league games this weekend, Saturday a tough 6-2 loss against division leading Rocky River. Goalie Kyle Czworkowski turned back 41 shots. Gavin Pate had a goal assisted by Ethan Warner and Nate Dubsky had a goal assisted by Ryan Suts and Jack Grasha. On Sunday, Kyle stopped 31 of 34 shots, with a back and forth game with Hudson, losing late in the 3rd period. Nate Dubsky had a goal assisted by Jack Lien, and Ryan Suts scored with an assist to Nolan Marcum. The hockey team has their annual Walter F Ehrnfelt Tournament this weekend. The team will be playing 4 games in the Red division, and they will have a split squad playing 4 games in the Blue division of the WFE
GIRLS BASKETBALL
The Girls Basketball team had a successful week going 2-0. On Wednesday, the varsity team defeated Mentor by a score of 61-36. Leading the way for the Mustangs in that game was Sophomore Guard Mackenzie Schulz who had a game high 25 points. Reagan Bass also chipped in 18 for the Lady Mustangs. The varsity team returned to action Saturday when they hosted the 6th ranked team in the state Canton GlenOak. Despite shooting only 14% from beyond the arc, the Lady Mustangs were able to get the victory 53-50. Reagan Bass led the team with 31 points. The schedule does not get any easier for the Mustangs as they host Elyria on Wednesday and then travel to #6 ranked Magnificat on Thursday and #8 ranked Medina on Saturday. Overall, the Varsity records sits at 5-3 and 4-0 in the GCC.
The JV team lost to Mentor on Wednesday by a score of 32-24 and then lost a tough game on Saturday to GlenOak by a final of 47-37. Currently, the JV team sits at
The Freshman team currently sits with a 5-3 record overall. The team defeated Avon Lake on Saturday by a score of 21-19. The team will be back in action this week when they host Elyria on Wednesday while traveling to Magnificat on Thursday and Medina on Saturday.
GYMNASTICS
It was a busy week for the varsity gymnastics team, starting with a 1/3/2020 meet at Mentor. Strongsville captured the team title and was led by Sarah Schoenberger winning vault, floor and the all around titles. Contributing to the winning team total was Kelsey Kappel (3rd on vault, 4th on bars, 6th all around), Olivia Bewie (6th on vault and 4th on floor), Avery Scullin (6th on vault), Kayla Perez (6th on beam, 4th on bars), and Izzy Hershkowitz. The Mustangs then traveled to Medina High School for the first GCC invitational of the year. The team finished third behind state runner up Brunswick and 2020 GCC champions Medina, with Brooke Zellers leading the way with 4th place finishes on vault and in the all around. The week ended with a fun, non sanctioned meet with North Royalton that served as a fundraiser for FOREHugh in support of fellow GCC coach, Jessica Araps of Mentor , who lost her husband to cancer a month ago. Strong performances were delivered by all the athletes, especially Camryn Larissey on vault and bars, Brooke Zellers and Amelia Sage on floor, Kelsey Kappel on bars, and Olivia Bewie on bars and floor.
BOYS AND GIRLS SWIMMING
The Swim and Dive teams competed in the GCC Championships over the weekend The GCC Championships had a different look this past weekend. The conference ran 3 duals at 3 different sites and then merged all the results to determine the outcome of the GCC Championships (Brunswick traveled to Medina, Mentor traveled to Solon, Elyria traveled to Strongsville and Euclid swam virtually at their own pool). The Boys also competed in the GCC Championships under the same format. The Boys team, who were a little short-handed, walked away with a 2nd place finish. CLICK HERE for the final merged results of the Boys Swim and Dive Championships.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Currently, the Varsity team sits with a 3-3 record. On Tuesday night, the Mustangs lost a hard fought battle to Elyria by a score of 56-52. The game was a back and forth battle and some miscues down the stretch were the difference in the game. On Friday, the team hosted rival Brunswick. The team saw some early success and was able to hang with the #8th ranked team in the area. The Mustangs were not able to overcome some scoring droughts as they fell to Brunswick 79-53.
The JV team moved its record to 4-2 with a victory on Tuesday over Elyria by a score of 65-49. On Friday, the team lost against a very tough Brunswick squad by a score of 58-29. Dean Riggi and Michael Novak led the Mustangs in scoring.
The Freshman team improved to 6-2 on the season with a 65-34 victory over Elyria. The team then came back on Friday and defeated Brunswick by a count of 53-30. Nick Quirino and Cal Klinzing led the way in scoring for the Mustangs against the Blue Devils.
Freshman and JV teams will be back in action Monday as they host Brush. The Varsity team will travel to Solon on Tuesday for another GCC match-up.
WRESTLING
On Thursday, rival Brunswick visited the Strongsville High school gym. Starting off strong, Strongsville won 7 of the first 10 matches, eventually winning 10 of 16 on the day. With a final score of 43-30 the Mustangs earned a hard fought victory and an impressive win against a tough Brunswick squad. At the midway point of the season we currently have 7 wrestlers with less than 2 losses, led by undefeated Juniors Kenny Lambert and Anthony Grecol. The team will travel to Solon on Thursday for another tough GCC contest
INDOOR TRACK
Friday night was Indoor Track's first indoor competition. The coaches were very impressed all around. SPIRE did an incredible job preparing to keep all the athletes safe. Most importantly, the Mustangs performed incredibly well including a number of Personal Records (PR’s):

ATHLETIC TRAINING UPDATES
As a reminder if you become positive for COVID and are asked to Isolate, you are not to be present at any games or practices. You are asked not to leave your home for any reasons until your isolation period is over. If you are found to be in violation, you are subject to losing a percentage of your regular season contests.
If you are asked to QUARANTINE and you leave your house, you must take a COVID test in order to return to your team. The CDC recently came out with shortened quarantine time, but as of right now the Ohio Department of Health and the Cuyahoga County Board of Health have NOT approved these changes yet.
COVID TESTING
We want to make sure everyone understands the testing procedures of COVID-19. If you suspect you may have COVID or you go and receive a COVID test, YOU ARE NOT to attend any practices or games until those test results come back. If you have questions on this, please reach out to the Athletic Training staff.
WINTER SPORTS REMINDERS AND UPDATES
OHSAA UPDATES
On Sunday, the OHSAA approved all winter sports tournaments to take place as originally scheduled. For Strongsville, we will once again compete in the Northeast district. Seeding procedures are different this year as is locations. Once teams are seeded, coaches can pick what sectional they want to attend. More information for each sports tournament will be communicated when it is received by the athletic department. ELIGIBILITY
STRONGSVILLE HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC SCHEDULE WEEK OF JANUARY 11-JANUARY 15, 2021
Currently, all games scheduled for the week are on as scheduled except for Friday at Mentor. Mentor had to postpone the game due to the varsity team being quarantined. No Make up date is scheduled yet. Keep in mind that changes can occur last minute and we do our best to communicate with all families immediately via final forms or the coaching staff.
Please check the online calendar listed below for the most up to date information and schedules. The calendar is constantly changing and sometimes take up to 24 hours to sync with the Athletic Website. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the athletic office for more information.
PRACTICES AND SCRIMMAGES CLOSED TO ALL SPECTATORS
Just a reminder that all practices and home scrimmages for all teams are closed to spectators. As we try to mitigate the spread of the COVID-19 virus, all practices will be closed to parents, friends and community members. When the time is appropriate to open facilities for spectators, we will communicate with all families. Thanks for your understanding
REMINDER ABOUT SPECTATOR POLICY
Just a reminder about the athletic spectator policy. Tickets to all HOME events must be purchased in advance and online through our online ticket partner, Ticket Spicket.
ONLY IMMEDIATE FAMILY MEMBERS (i.e. parents and siblings) are allowed at home games. If you are NOT using your tickets, please do not "give" your allocated amount to another family. No ticket codes should be given to students to attend the games. There will be some new procedures in place for all spectators and you maybe asked to show your ticket if we think you are not supposed to be at the game.
Finally, we will still be sanitizing in between games. All spectators MUST clear the gym and only those spectators with student-athletes playing in the game may enter the gym. If you are a JV family, you ARE NOT PERMITTED to stay for the varsity game unless you have a son or daughter that is playing in the varsity game as well.
